Rooftop Deck at the Delta Lounge in JFK

Check out Laura Flippin's latest blog post:

The Rooftop Desk at the Delta Lounge has been open for just over a year, but only recently on an international flight from JFK to Europe did I have a chance to check it out.  Put aside for a minute your prejudices about the practicality of such an amenity – e.g. “Who wants to sit on the rooftop amidst jet fuel and smoke overlooking a runway?””  Instead, focus on what it’s like to find an unexpected experience in travel, something out of the ordinary that makes travel feel civilized again.  Think Mad Men.  Think private jets.  Think luxury that is rare these days.

The deck has a sort of Miami Beach feel with lounge chairs and comfortable tables, not to mention the all-important Wi-Fi access for free.  Plus, the large glass windows allow you to see a lot without suffering through the fumes and air traffic snarls.  The noise from the tarmac is even a bit muffled.  I tried it out on a hot day in July, and found myself actually enjoying the atmosphere as a welcome break from the crowded terminal.  And the deck was pretty empty – maybe that’s because there is no outdoor bar and no pool (now that would be cool!), but it was still really awesome to feel for an hour or so like I was in my own semi-private resort.

Don’t pay extra to get into the lounge for the rooftop deck, but if you happen to be at JFK and you have access to the lounge already, check it out.
